MY FAMILY'S MEDICAID STORY

"In the fall of 2014, my 97 year old mother suffered a debilitating stroke that put her permanently in a nursing home. In addition to dealing with her care and well-being we were also forced to face the hard reality of paying for the cost of that care. Applying for Medicaid became our only option. We were given the names of several elder law lawyers, and were warned the process could be difficult and time consuming. 

After making a few phone calls, it became apparent it would be very costly as well. We were informed that the average fee upfront would be $10,000, even before an appointment was made. If we couldn’t find enough money to pay for my mother’s care, how could we even justify the cost of a lawyer?  So we decided to tackle the application process ourselves. “Besides, how hard could it be…? online.” I did quite a bit of preliminary research and reading to familiarize myself with the terminology and application procedure.
